A proper update mechanism would not display any Authenticode dialog to the user. That sort of thing is not a decision for the user to make.

Oh, I find Rufus quite useful. I use it myself (in a VM), and that's why I noticed the problem.

Yeah, with *any* valid code signing cert, it'd be the same as the "official" update. I just went with self-signed 'cause it was quick/free.

So it has a signature (according to the dev reply) but the updater doesn't check it or...?

It's signed by an Authenticode code signing certificate. It then uses Windows itself to verify, which passes the decision to the user.
