Without sharing what cracking strategies have been exhausted already, isn't this just an invitation to waste electricity?

reverse engineering code and network traffic analysis are all my day to day strong points. I know very little about cracking /etc/passwd hashes, but I do know that it seems like it should be viable with a decent GPU and wordlist (I doubt Sonos used something complex)

Indeed. However, any distributed computing architecture that does nothing to prevent duplicated effort is, well, non-ideal.

Your comment assumes a simple password.
However, if @rexploit is asking for cracking help, I think that's fair enough evidence that it is *not* a simple pass.
Without knowing what's been attempted so far, anybody helping is probably duplicating already-completed work.
