This is in no way iOS specific. Mobiles are generally a free for all when it comes to giving advertisers what they want. Who wants to pay for apps, amirite? And actually iOS was way ahead of Android when it came to the ability to block an app from knowing location when not in use

Indeed Android is no better, but if Apple is going to make a big play about privacy and protecting user data from tracking then they should be consistent ATM Apple are busily (and rightly IMV) pointing the finger at Google while allowing iOS apps to do similar things unchecked

Absolutely. Apple has no room for finger pointing. The main advice I have is to not install apps for things easily done via a web browser. (e.g. Twitter) But obviously this isn't something that the masses will adopt.
