HTTPS traffic cannot be inspected unless either: 1) The mitmproxy root CA certificate has been installed on the device being inspected. Depending on the device, this may require it to be "rooted" 2) The device isn't validating HTTPS traffic. Could be a problem. Which is it here?

Ah, good! And to be honest, I think I was conflating iOS behavior with modern Android behavior. It's the latter which in requires rooting or other trickery to install a system-level trusted root CA.
