Well I'll file this under (mindblown), I guess? This is a Windows 10 install in a VM where nothing about SMB has ever been configured. Note that it comes with "SMB 1.0/CIFS Server" enabled by default. I don't know how to deconflict how "Automatic Removal" factors in there.pic.twitter.com/q9mrZB2cj4

I’d like your precise repro steps for this, including edition. We do not install SMB1 server by default ever in any edition - the only way to get it is via in-place upgrade from a machine that had it on, or by installing it manually. If it came OOB it’s a bug

It's pretty simple: 1) Install Win10 (e.g. Enterprise) around when it came out. Use an old ISO if you don't have time machine access. 2) Check SMBv1 status after install 3) Upgrade Windows 10 to a version more modern and check SMBv1 status again. I can't imagine this is uncommonpic.twitter.com/cK6ul0KblV

So you installed RTM Enterprise then upgraded it in place to a current preview?

If yes, check the first link I pointed out. It explains that this is by design behavior. Enterprise admins are expected to know if they need SMB1 and uninstall it if not, or wait for the automatic uninstaller to do so for them if they don’t.

If they know they need it how hard can it be to turn it back on?

Tell that to a CIO who found out they needed it after a 40,000 seat outage, though. The potential for homegrown LOB, missed, or shadow 3rd party SMB1 in a large enterprise is pretty vast, especially where Linux has a presence. Seehttp://aka.ms/stillneedssmb1

But you just said that enterprise admins would know if they needed it? Also, yeah, if you don't test your deployments and they fail the reason is you didn't test your deployments.

Some do and some don’t. When you deal with as many customers as Windows has, even small percentages have huge consequences either way. People like to think there are one size fits all solutions, but they should try owning a protocol on several billion computers first 🙂

That why we do one behavior for clean (no smb1) and a different one for existing (whatever you had set for smb1 we leave u touched at first, and if it was just an inherited mistake, we auto uninstall later)

I have yet to see the SMB1 server feature auto uninstall (either in a VM or on bare metal). But I guess perhaps there's a scenario where it could happen?

Have you seen the client uninstall? Your earlier replies implied you weren’t aware of this feature. It will take 15 uptime days without an inbound/outbound connection to trigger.

Correct. Other than you mentioning it, I haven't seen any evidence that the feature exists. And I've not seen SMB1 automatically uninstall in any of my VMs that have it by default, nor have I seen SMB1 automatically uninstall on the Win10 machine that hosts the VMs.
