Questions: 1) What is a "fake permission pop-up" ? If the pop-up itself is fake, I fail to see how answering it can actually grant a permission. 2) If this dialog is real, then this demo involved having malware installed that has an empty app name? "Allow <appname> to ..."

1: The permission pop-up is not fake. 2: The dialog is the real permission dialog. If the app name is empty, then it says "Allow to ..." thus you don't see that it is the malware that tries to gain this permission.

Thanks for the clarification! My original tweet failed to include the screenshot I was referring to, so here it is for anybody playing at home. And in comparison, a sample standard permissions dialog where the app author hasn't used an empty short app name. "Polish" is displayed.pic.twitter.com/R8piaqqCx5

And also for the record, the application name displayed in the dialog isn't *directly* in the AndroidManifest.xml file. But rather that file specifies the string to be used in that dialog, and the string value is in a separate file, like res/values/strings.xmlpic.twitter.com/BJQ4PU72qA

          That's absolutely correct. 👍
