Why don't kernel security issues get CVEs?
The Linux kernel maintainers fix all bugs without doing the investigation work to determine whether they are security vulnerabilities or not. Bugs reported explicitly as security vulns get CVEs but usually because the reporter reserves one. Result: many exploitable LPEs w/o CVEs.
In addition, distros with “frankenkernels” that selectively backport features and patches (e.g. RedHat/CentOS) only backport commits marked as a security vulnerability with a CVE. FD: I don’t work on Linux kernel/distro, but the above is my understanding of the situation.
Indeed. Latest CentOS 7 (and subsequently RHEL 7) uses Linux kernel 3.10 Centos 8 uses Linux kernel 4.18. But it was just released last month, so I don't suspect that too many people are using it yet. Have fun tracking down which vulnerability fixes it contains. esp. W/O CVE.pic.twitter.com/5K6GekTvtV
