The amount of hysterical, either out-of-context or plainly inaccurate coverage that's going around in major tech journalism outlets about this Samsung fingerprint stuff is really quite impressive. Even reletive to usual standards.

I have to admit that I haven't been following this too closely. Is it incorrect to say that a Galaxy S10 can be unlocked with a fingerprint other than what's registered with the device? If not, then what coverage is inaccurate?

The original report is from a low- credibility source (a British tabloid) that everyone is just rephrasing and putting sensationalist headlines on. At best, it seems to require a pretty specific set of circumstances that can't be relied on. See for eg:https://twitter.com/MaxWinebach/status/1184843517358534658?s=19 …

Max WeinbachVerified account @MaxWinebachI still can't get this to work. I've tried a bunch of cases on 4 different S10 and Note10s. Nothing unlocks it. I'm not saying there isn't an issue, but I'm saying I can't recreate it so I take the "any fingerprint unlocks the S10" as "oh so it's not much of an issue for me" https://twitter.com/BBCTech/status/1184754885599924224 …1 reply 1 retweet 0 likes -

So the quote that
@SamsungMobile is "aware of the case of S10's malfunctioning fingerprint recognition and will soon issue a software patch", which has by now made it to@BBCNews@arstechnica@Forbes and more, has not been confirmed?1 reply 0 retweets 0 likes -
Replying to @wdormann @SamsungMobile and
I'm sure there's an issue, in that no matter what sort of screen protector/case you have on the device when you register a print it shouldn't allow arbitrary unlock. But there's as yet no indication this is could be a reliably exploitable thing in the real world.

Here's the official Samsung statement: https://news.samsung.com/global/statement-on-fingerprint-recognition-issue … "If you currently use front screen protective covers, to ensure optimum fingerprint scanning, please refrain from using this cover until your device has been updated with a new software patch."
