Vendors who make crosswalk signs may use two slightly-different beeps to indicate completely OPPOSITE things. 1) Beep so that you can locate the button. Beeping now = UNSAFE to cross! 2)Beep so that you know it's safe to cross. Beeping now = SAFE to cross! How does this happen??https://twitter.com/wdormann/status/1184841495507079168 …

So according to my kid, the chirping at Forbes and Craig when it’s not safe to cross is a locator tone for finding the button. And they use the voice announcements for crossing, but could theoretically use a different chime for crossing.

Because the one at Fifth and Craig is older, it doesn’t a have locator tone. He did say there are intersections in Squirrel Hill that use both a locator tone and crossing chirps.

Good luck with that! Best bet would probably be to get some kind of ADA amendment to cover it. Although in the interim you would hope the city would have better identified this potential conflict.

BTW, the Tartan had an article on the "death" of the Beep Boop crosswalk at Forbes and Morewood, with some background info. https://thetartan-assets.s3.amazonaws.com/edition/pdf/433/Vol114Issue1.pdf …
