Nah, but they should! Android phones will tell you that "You have the latest update" when they really should say "You have the last update".

To motivate retiring of abandoned devices, an active alert to users is probably the best. Let's check some real-world devices to see what happens when users *manually* check for updates. You get update availability, which is in no way an indicator of your device being abandoned.pic.twitter.com/fRY7tJWUc2

The fact that iPhones specifically don't call this out has always seemed odd to me. Non-Pixel Android lifecycles have historically been murky, but moving forward, phones should 100% have a way to give this feedback to the user - and not just when the user goes looking for it.

Indeed. I've got a blog post in the works on this (and related) and I just want to make sure that I don't say something that is obviously wrong.

If a device were to notify the user that it was EOL, how would the press cover it? My guess is "Manufacturer pressures users to buy new devices".

Milk has an expiration date. Raw meat has an expiration date. Baby formula has an expiration date. Are those things conspiracies by the manufacturers to increase their sales? Having said that, yes, I'm sure some press would cover smartphone expiration dates in the same way.
