Though I suspect that the mechanism in the Win2k3 case may be something different altogether. Especially since the screen locking (via screensaver only it seems?) appears to be a different beast. i.e. once the screensaver kicks on, perhaps it's not actually locked yet?

That is, on Windows 2003, perhaps the screensaver-induced session lock doesn't actually lock the session until the point where you try to interact with it, as opposed to when the screensaver first comes on? Either way, I hope that nobody cares by this point.
