According to one report [0] 48% of cell calls go unanswered. The abstract implies this is due to assumptive spam. If so, this benefits the telemarketers: the people still answering are the more vulnerable. See also: why scammers still claim to be Nigerian princes in their spam emails. Target audience pre-selection. Related: I don't answer my phone for anyone not in my address book, due to rampant robocalls with spoofed caller ID.
