I now have a clone of this Windows-7-killing drive. Meaning that it's the sequence of bits contained within the writable storage, rather than something on the USB level. Neat.pic.twitter.com/vB4XPLmxvv

It's just a divide by zero in the Windows 7 (and earlier) kernel. So not terribly useful beyond a DoS.
its nothing new either, there is a couple of PoCs on github that show a malformed NTFS filesystem that BSODs a Win 10 fully patched machine
Indeed. And now that I look, the way I found it is already public: https://github.com/pbatard/rufus/issues/1188 … And from another set on Github: https://github.com/mtivadar/windows10_ntfs_crash_dos … Does Microsoft not realize that USB drives can be plugged into a remote RDP system that has RemoteFX enabled?pic.twitter.com/QZiz5Jbf1H
Does it work through RDP though?
Absolutely. If RemoteFX is enabled.
Nice. I suppose you don't even have to login to the remote computer to crash it, correct?
Good idea! At least in my testing, a client that supports RemoteFX (USB passthru) seems to always use network-level authentication. Even if the system being connected to allows either auth methods. If anybody can figure out how to get legacy auth on a RemoteFX client I can test.
OK, looks like this can be forced by editing the .RDP file for the connection on the client: https://gist.github.com/pingec/7b391a04412a7034bfb6 … It looks like RDP does the sane thing of not allowing RemoteFX USB passthrough until *after* the client has logged in (in this case using the RDP GUI).pic.twitter.com/icoPF6f21r
That's good news.
