That could very well be it. To be honest, all I did was wrote a specific bootable ISO to a thumb drive with Rufus.
This happened to me with a Kensington drive that I removed without unmounting in debian. Plugged it into any win10 box and it would bsod. Purely accidental and fun
Both of these situations make me think that mass storage could be an interesting fuzz target.
