Downloaded APK is called - Game Center. This app is downloaded in the background and requests user to install it. Once launched, it hide itself & displays ads when device is unlocked. Thanks to @wdormann for sending me link to downloaded APK. How do these apps even get past Google Play screening? Do they not filter apps at all these days?

According to the post, there are a series of games which were downloadable though the play store. After launching the game it would download an APK from an external source and ask the user to install it. So, Google doesn't see anything more than a game with almost no content.

Similarly, Android apps can dynamically download code to execute directly. This creates a situation where it is impossible for Google Bouncer to detect all malicious apps, since the developer can flip the switch remotely whenever they like.

Yeah well thanks for explaining, but my point was really why approve a game with no content, that is plain suspicious. I use both iOS and Android on a daily basis, and Apple almkst never clears apps like that.

Google does an automated heuristic solution alongside testing for various hardware and architectures. Apple has a manual vetting process along with some automated code checks.

This is disgraceful. Thank you Will for explaining this even though I don't download games. I wonder if this applies to all apps not just games?

Yeah, anyone can develop an app and advertise it as something else. Make sure to be careful of what you download and to not install anything an app tells you to unless it's from the official app store. That will help catch some malware as a basic precaution.
