Yes, it's a small, slow microcontroller but how do you reroute power, and 16+ pcb traces to a tiny chip, and how do you keep it a secret when the design has to be approved by 20+ engineers?
I don't believe that the article mentions where in the design / manufacturing process the chip was added. If it's late enough, it wouldn't need too much (or any) approval. I'm quite curious about the interface between the chip and the motherboard, but those details aren't there.
