In the world of multi-core CPUS, Gentoo is less painful than it used to be. Report back after a year and you want to perform some package updates, though, for a real-world viability study.

That is, set up a system that you perform security updates only on. Eventually you'll have a security update that has some cascading dependency updates required, resulting in you doing web searches finding a random post for what sort of emerge trickery is required to proceed.

This is just a throw away system, so I won't both with updates. Eventually I'll build a system for longer term use.
