This exploit is quite reliable on Windows! Unless you have Windows Defender Exploit Guard specifically enabling additional protections beyond the standard DEP + ASLR for vlc.exe, you're in trouble if you're on VLC 2.x. UAF + heap spray means only DEP and ASLR isn't good enough.https://twitter.com/ddouhine/status/1019898366996680705 …

Update VLC ! Incoming #metasploit exploit targeting a UAF in VideoLAN VLC media player <= 2.2.8 ! CVE-2018-11529 discovered and exploited by Eugene Ng and module coded by Winston Ho. I guess sharing this on Torrent will pop a few shells ;) https://github.com/rapid7/metasploit-framework/pull/10335 … pic.twitter.com/p61iqjFdJF

Wait a minute here... despite VLC apparently being compiled with ASLR compatiblity, it's being loaded at 0x00400000 every single time. Can anybody share any insight as to what's going on here?pic.twitter.com/0Qlycj9XS0

relocation table is missing :) without a relocation table Microsoft doesn't relocate it (even if ASLR is on). You would need to enable forced ASLR for this.

If a binary is compiled with /DYNAMICBASE, doesn't that automatically ensure that it has a relocation table? If that's not the case, that seems like a huge oversight, no?

Well I'll be damned! You are indeed correct. @videolan vlc.exe has /DYNAMICBASE but also has its relocation table stripped, which means that it cannot be randomized. How is this combination even allowed to be linked? @mkolsekpic.twitter.com/mOl9RC9jDK

We did not know that was possible, tbh... 2.2.x and 3.0.3 affected? 32 and 64bits are the same ?

Yes, VLC versions up to and including 3.0.3 are affected. Both 32-bit and 64-bit. If the relocation tables were not stripped, then the public exploits for VLC 2.2.8 would not have worked! (the exploits make use of fixed offsets for ROP)

Great catch, @ReneFreingruber and @wdormann! @videolan, can you check how your compiler is configured to let this happen at all?

It is gcc and Mingw without any special configuration. We'll check asap. Very weird...
