Interesting detail is how ssler intercepts outgoing HTTP requests and rewrites HTTPS urls in the responses. If I type "http://foo.com " into the URL bar, does Chrome try HTTPS first and *then* fallback to HTTP?

Unless your fingers type "https://" before the website you care about visiting, you're relying on the target site employing something like HSTS to keep you on HTTPS. Which is probably a bad idea.
