The thing that vscode does of showing you the definition of an identifier when you hover over it seems like it captures some of this, but it's not wholly satisfying.
The IDE is rooted in a class-hierarchy pane from which you select methods, a la Smalltalk. Opening a function puts it onto a canvas, and "jump to definition" opens a bubble near the call instead of in a separate window. Here's a full screenshot from their paper:pic.twitter.com/zOT6vzh58a
Bubbles are laid onto an infinite canvas, and scaling happens via spacing within a canvas and onto multiple canvas (as hinted by the minimaps in the top bar). VSCode's preview pane is similar, but it's more like a transient interruption than permanent comparison.
