does this work for data structures? I've been thinking about trying to optimize some for a project I'm working on and being able to write them in not-C would be great, though I admittedly know zero Rust

Yes, you can expose classes with methods callable from Python but implemented in Rust. See: https://pyo3.rs/v0.13.2/class.html … If you're interested in high-perf Python, you might also check out pybind11 (https://github.com/pybind/pybind11 ) or Cython (https://cython.org/ ).
