writing a browser extension should be easier than making a Web page

feels off -- if I want to put a new sofa in my own house, then I know the layout, what I can move around, whether I need it in the first place. if I bring a portable sofa to other peoples' houses, very little guarantee it will work

at least, there's a clear tension between "return to geocities, personalized web presence / end user programming for everyone" and "browser extension that works seamlessly in any context" (cc @geoffreylitt)

i think an important thing is having a way to gauge how hard a tweak might be. some changes are "repaint the wall", others are "move the central beam of the house" -- in software it's so tough to know (even for pros sometimes)

yeah, Will is right about the issues w making a browser extension that works in general, but -- 1. I mean this as a provocation: imo, for many people, making an extension would be just as useful (or more) as a Web page, so could we push the difficulty to reflect the usefulness?

      2. I don't think an extension would necessarily need to work seamlessly in any context! an extension (unlike a Web page, notably) may be useful even if it only works on your personal computer, for one site, one time

      3. a lot of the difficulty of making an extension that I had in mind isn't these Web content issues; it's stuff like, you have to write it as these 3 separate scripts that communicate asynchronously, and you need weird manifest file, and you need to manually import your extension

my gold standard for extensibility has always been Garry's Mod - easy to attach a programming chip to any object - easy to inspect others' work and duplicate it - permissions handled by the game - nice difficulty slope of hardcoded actions -> digital circuits -> full programs

i have a chrome extension that literally just hides the facebook news feed -- something like that should be trivial. in gmod, you have a toolgun that can toggle visibility of objects. point, click, done. persists across loads of the map. i just want my toolgun back :(

i do this kind of thing for lots of sites via stylus+devtools. a direct-manipulator / dom-structure-editor targeting this workflow might be a sweet spot. i think some kind of hybrid in-line editing might be a good take here ala my reply here:https://disconcision.com/post/617119019406934016/this-may-not-be-relevant-as-im-not-100-sure-im …
