open question for compiler people: what should be taught in a modern undergrad compiler class? I'm revamping / modernizing Utah's version of this and would appreciate feedback

@simrob used to say that the compilers course at CMU was 50% compilers 50% software engineering simulation. Unique chance to incrementally build a large, layered system with an evolving spec. Is it important for your students to have that kind of experience?

This is what I was thinking as well. As a student, Compilers is often the first time you'll experience a large code base with complicated interfaces, real need for serious testing, chunks of code from other people that may not make sense... Very few other classes have that
