      is Linux's source code written to be instructive? is it democratic in this sense? what about Chrome?

      also consider how welcoming the community is -- consider Linux (Linus's rants) vs. Rust compiler, which has a code of conduct and issues are explicitly marked with "appropriate for beginners" or "willing to mentor new contributors"
