fair point! but if it comes down to having to choose at any point, trust me, do OPLSS over PLISS

+1 OPLSS. The videos are also awesome.

My 2c as someone PL-adjacent: I thought OPLSS last year was fun, but not useful. Lecture format with no interaction is exhausting, and I learned little. 95% of value was hanging out with attendees and making friends.

Agree. I think it is valuable under two conditions, (1) if your primary interest is theoretical (for lack of a better term) PL and (2) you have already studied it for a bit. Also, the topics change year-to-year, so go during a year where topics are things you care about.

I went to OPLSS with very little background, and understood about 20%. Now that I'm a few years deep, I can re-watch the videos from the year I attended and I get about 80%.

It is a dangerous game. I actually left feeling slightly demoralized. There were folks there who were in their first year (like me) who understood all this type theory and were theorem proving wizards, it really fueled imposter syndrome for me.

Still glad I went, and still very grateful for it as a resource. But don't compare yourself to others, just bask in the theorems.

All good points! But my critique is just about teaching practice. OPLSS is designed to teach things, and lectures are not the best medium. The format should include labs, psets, collaborative learning.

Ah, they must have changed things! The year that I attended they had all of these things. There were exercise problems, and instructors would rotate around the lecture space and help with them. That being said, I was so tired after lectures all day that I rarely attended. 😛
