One striking feature of programming language history is that two of the most influential languages ever created were designed by committee: Algol and Haskell, both under quite similar circumstances.pic.twitter.com/fTKFAg6Gtp

The main difference was political: Haskell arose out of an academic sense of mathematical unity, whereas Algol (particularly for the Europeans) represented a spirit of international cooperation. "It was machine independent, both technically and politically."pic.twitter.com/4xsIPEgzrs

Both languages arose at a time where academics collectively shared a strong vision for the next step in language design. "For all its shortcomings, Haskell is often described as 'beautiful' or 'elegant'--even 'cool'... we all needed Haskell."pic.twitter.com/aJzEHDW1pa

Both languages never had a formal semantics, albeit for different reasons. Haskell: "It just never seemed to be the most urgent task." Algol: "Like the Bible, [the report] was meant, not merely to be read, but to be interpreted."pic.twitter.com/r6MBHSxmar

The two most influential programming languages would be either FORTAN or COBOL and C. The first creates the idea of a human intelligible program, and the next creates the ability to write an operating system in intelligible code.

To say "designed by committee" is a poor choice of words, at least as regards ALGOL. Both ALGOL 58 and 60 were designed in single meetings with 8 and 13 participants, respectively. More accurate would be to say ALGOL was designed by a *group*.
