I feel like data science is underappreciated as a pathway into programming. Numpy/Pandas embody the LOGO ethos: 1) DSLs where operations map to existing vocab (i.e. high school statistics), 2) highly visible program state (Jupyter + dataframes).

That's a very good first approximation. I'm terrified about CS and DS splitting into parallel streams, when both really need both and students often can't choose w/out exposure. Messages like yours are the new hip cool idea, but that doesn't make them wise. (-:
