I feel like data science is underappreciated as a pathway into programming. Numpy/Pandas embody the LOGO ethos: 1) DSLs where operations map to existing vocab (i.e. high school statistics), 2) highly visible program state (Jupyter + dataframes).

That's a function of how boring your CS1 is. At Brown we're working on what we call a data-CENTRIC intro, which is a merge of both. Slogan: data-centric = data science + data structures You don't want students to be without either. Having both opens up lots of future paths.
