Particularly since "data scientist" is rapidly becoming a major/profession unto itself, seems like more effort should go into thinking about how computational thinking could be introduced in the context of data science courses.

What if you replaced CS1 with intro to data science entirely? Data analysis seems more fun and accessible than Fibonacci, or printing out an ASCII pyramid.

To me it seems like you’re describing characteristics of the Map (that is, the preferable qualities of, certain kinds of programming environments) not the territory (of data science). CS1 could be made more accessible by embracing those qualities—the territory could be anything.

In my ideal future, CS1 wouldn't exist because why would you learn programming in the context of boring, one-size-fits-all applications? The fundamental premise of teaching programming as a standalone concept is flawed, as opposed to naturally integrating into existing contexts.
