What's frustrating is that @AOC's explanation is really quite good without going so far as to say "they left minorities out of their labeled training set". To say "it's just math" is a stupidly reductionist response to a nuanced argument.
She explicitly referenced IBM's facial recognition, which (like all state of the art in facial recognition) uses convolutional neural nets with labeled training data. IBM themselves said this and are trying to fix their datasets. https://www.ibm.com/blogs/research/2018/06/ai-facial-analytics/ …
