To be completely honest, I'm not sure if it ever *completely* clicked. I still find myself having to regain context on Wikipedia / textbooks, esp when I actually want to use these ideas more practically (more than just the ideas / to think, but actually to perform calculations)

But to answer your question, I think "doing" it a lot helped. Doing the proofs myself. Writing code that simulates drawing from different distributions and visualizing the results. Applying to problem sets, etc.
