Agreed that the creativity has diffused into other corners of the Internet. Curious though what you mean by "self-contained" here? It's possible to create a self-contained JS app, although creative tooling seems lacking.

A SWF file was self-contained the way a JPG is self-contained. 1 file that can be uploaded via FTP, opened locally, sent via email. 1 HTTP request. You'd sling SWFs around the same way you'd swap tapes or hand out zines. Everyone had Flash Player, so it felt zero-dependency.
