It's a shame how open source burns people out. Even without controversies, the toll of bug reports and keeping the lights on gets draining. Add in people demanding your time, and it gets old fast. I used to open source in the hope someone would find it useful. Now I just don't.

So if I haven't replied to your pull request, or added a feature you are interested in, it is probably because I spend far more time away from the screen. Maybe splitting rocks, raising chickens, tapping sugar maples, woodworking – most of all enjoying this wonderful creation.

When I used to live in a more suburban area (and rent), I spent a lot of free time working on open source. Now that I live more rurally, I spend more of my free time developing skills that have been around much longer.

I've noticed a change in bug reports over the past 10 years. I feel like it used to be that in the past many feature requests were fairly neutral, whereas now I see many more instances of demands, insults, threats, etc when a requested feature isn't immediately added.

My 2013 rMBP is feeling more like a Linux laptop with Catalina these days. Pretty sure the Nvidia driver is to blame since it crashes when I plug in my external display. Was going to purchase a Linux laptop this year, but maybe a 16” MBP instead. 😕

I just gladly paid for a bunch of 2 year domain validation TLS certificates because buying them is a fraction of the cost of the time to get let's encrypt working properly and dealing with the side-effects.

FYI the messaging/marketing around sponsors is *super* confusing. I see big banners saying it is out of beta and generally available, but then the only option is to join a waitlist? Those seem like opposing statements.

macOS 10.15.1 is out, so all the issues with 10.15.0 should be resolved now, right? :-D

Someone buy the GitHub designers a smaller monitor!

Time Machine decided I needed a new full backup, and proceeded to spend 2 days deleting 5TB of old snapshots under the status of "preparing backup". Uh, what?!

Yeah, so apparently the OWC SSDs for Late 2013 rMBP are (sometimes) too good to be true. Apparently some machines just don't like NVMe drives and kernel panic coming out of sleep. :-(

I find it interesting that GitHub contributions to my crypto-related repositories almost always come from users with very little GitHub activity, and usually an anonymous profile/avatar. Other repositories tend to get involvements from users with photos and often real names.

I must say, I made it five years without any hardware issues (battery), and six until the SSD. The machine is still my daily driver. Also, Time Machine and internet recovery are excellent.

Just lost my first SSD. The internal drive on my 2013 rMBP bit the dust. Thank goodness the machine is old enough you can swap them out easily, and that replacements are fairly inexpensive.

Trying to customize setuptools to create packages from non-standard layouts, and include things like LICENSE and docs in the sdist is… challenging

The Chrome, Firefox and Safari teams spend so much time worrying about EV certs and cert lifetimes, yet the usability of an expired certificate page is still a disaster.

I think for the first time ever I saw a raid array rebuild itself successfully after having a disk fail. I'm convinced having two parity drives (raid 6) and monthly consistency checks is a key part.

If you are thinking of using Let's Encrypt with Apple Pay, just be aware that the short lifetime on the LE certs means that you have to manually reconfirm your domain with Apple Pay every couple of months. Might be worth spending the $15 for a 2 year cert from another CA.

This does not bode well in terms of actually finding help in an alternative approach.
