Rishi Sunak’s latest asylum ban is immoral, inhumane and in breach of international law. We don’t need to see his Whatsapps to know why he is escalating his war on refugees: to stoke division, hatred & fear. Seeking asylum is a human right — we must fight back to protect it.

Johnson has been cornered. He has no room to manoeuvre so relies on damning defence that he had no idea what his own rules were. Obviously false. He lied to the House and is happy to keep lying now - he is contemptuous of people who sacrificed so much and is not fit to be an MP

I’m shocked that AI folks can’t see that this is nothing more than another overhyped tech. As impressive as ChatGPT is it’s just a carnival trick. LLMs will find their niche and serve a very useful purpose just like every AI advance has over the past 50 years. But that’s about it

“in spite of terrors like the Terminator, the smart money was always on banality. The dreariness of ChatGPT, the soulless works of visual art produced by similar programs seem to confirm that hunch”

Are we really still buying into this lie about productivity? The same promises were made about the PC, laptop, smart phone & now #AI. It should be clear that these tools won't liberate anyone without changes to the underlying social, economic, & political systems they operate in.

these tools will help us be more productive (can't wait to spend less time doing email!), healthier (AI medical advisors for people who can’t afford care), smarter (students using ChatGPT to learn), and more entertained (AI memes lolol).

1970s Britain owned its water, transport, mail, energy, millions of council houses and sat on a huge North Sea reserve. The national debt was £80bn. 2022 Britain has no assets and a national debt of £2.5 trillion. Neoliberalism started by Thatcher has destroyed the UK.

I accept the broad thrust of your argument, Larry Elliot, but please stop perpetuating patent nonsense. It is simply not true that “ChatGPT is a machine that can write intelligently.” It might appear intelligent but it is not intelligent.

According to ChatGPT, “while ChatGPT can generate seemingly intelligent and coherent responses, it does not possess true understanding in the way that humans do.” As I’ve said many times, AI understands nothing… it might look like it does… but it doesn’t.

“Although the U.K. was a relative growth laggard during the 1970s, this was nothing in comparison to today’s current collapse in living standards. Average U.K. real wages are now lower than 18 years ago, which is unprecedented in the country’s peacetime economic history.”
