Just watched your presentation and really enjoyed it, I assume you didn't look into the non Unleashed Ruckus firmware? As it appears the unleashed has moved quite far from the standard "zone flex" firmware.
Yes, that's right. "ZoneFlex" and "Unleashed" firmware look very different and I doubt if they share any codebase. However, "ZoneDirectory" firmware shares some vulnerable codebase with "Unleashed".

That's what I took away from it. I have an older model Zoneflex AP and was looking to build a openwrt image and was wondering if there were exploits I could use to get shell and then use that to for flashing the image.

Unfortunately busybox shell is not enough for installing openwrt on a router. You need openwrt to support the device hardware. As far as I know, openwrt do not support ruckus devices.
