Yup, I can see why they wanna do it but they should have at least notified people or asked permission in a way.. Cos it will discourage people from making custom thumbnails until The exp is over.

Yeah, you'd think anyway that Google has the machine learning power to analyse thumbnails and frames from a video to learn what's best (as this 0.3% test is for automatically generated thumbnails).

It can take me a few hours to take and finish a thumbnail, and YT taking away my control of how my video is presented to some users is not comforting as a creator.

I agree. Especially when thumbnail is key to whether people click on video or not. It's as important, if not then the title. But maybe this is to combat clickbait thumbnails?

Yeah, it could be a bit of research to see how the user responds differently to the thumbnail. This is quoted from

Hmm maybe. Yeah I saw that. Some of the auto ones aren't bad. Not sure about now but in the past they were always really low res.

I think they've gotten better, but they're still not amazing. This is the thumbnail from my newest vid, auto-generated on the left and mine on the right.pic.twitter.com/1B8993IJRQ

That was just the biggest size I could get that generated one at, not Twitter's fault this time
