    The interesting thing about "failing schools" is that we never hear that rhetoric in the discourse about private schools, where many more are literally failing (i.e. ceasing to exist). Catholic schools, for instance, are failing across the country.

    Maybe the scandal is that it shouldn't have been a fund controlled by the governor? But then the NCGA seized the money. Maybe it wasn't being properly spent on what was negotiated? But the NCGA spent it for entirely different purposes.

    I've read many articles on this and still have no idea what the scandal is supposed to be. Maybe the scandal is that the fund was illegally negotiated? But then you would think the remedy would be returning the money and censuring the governor.

    The story as I understand it is that the Governor negotiated a side fund for environmental mitigation, and then started using the money for... environmental mitigation. Then the NCGA took the money and used it for schools instead.

    I think they were going for proportion, but importantly this doesn't say anything about locality preference. Why should randos from Greenville dictate monuments in downtown Raleigh, Chapel Hill, or Pittsboro?

    On Friday, the NYT did a piece about a podcast Secretary Clinton did with David Plouffe. They incorrectly quoted her saying that the “Russians” were “grooming” a candidate running in the Democratic primary. They rightfully fixed it to reflect that she was taking about the GOP.

    For some, suspicions of Rep. Gabbard stretch back to when Russia first intervened in Syria. The Russians claimed to be targeting ISIS but stirred protests when they bombed anti-Assad rebel areas with no known ISIS presence. Gabbard had a different take.
