With the monsoon front located abnormally north and west, Tokyo looks to be stuck in a heat wave for the next several days at least.

Why you should secure tall furniture in quake country, or replace it with low furniture (as we did). This is inside a house near the epicenter of yesterday's (Ibaraki-shi).

From my inbox, the inside of a house in Ibaraki-shi, northern Osaka, following yesterday's quake. We got rid of our tall things after the Chu-etsu quake of 2004.

This National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology map shows known fault lines in the Osaka area and the epicenter (red dot) of today's M6.1 quake. Note that Osaka Prefecture has several cities, and the quake was not under Osaka City itself.

The convenience store 2 minutes from our house has a wide selection of good sake like this. The guy who runs the store is an accredited sake "somelier" ( 利酒師). Really enjoyed this one tonight, from Okunomatsu Sake Brewery in ,where some of the best sake is made.

The view of Sakurajima from Kagoshima City right now is dark and menacing

The difference between "healthy life expectancy" (pink) and actual life expectancy means on average, women in Japan spend the last 12 or so years of their life, and men the last 9, in poor health.
