"The story has become humdrum, so routine that newspapers barely stir themselves to report on all the deaths in their family."

Lawyers who file petitions for clemency say the system has been agonizingly slow for decades. Every president has been accused of exploiting the pardon power. But under Trump, the system has gotten even slower, and political grants are the rule, not the exception.

In June 2018, Trump vowed to grant more pardons. “We have 3,000 names," he said, setting off waves of anticipation in the federal prison system. Nichole Forde, serving a 27-year sentence, is now losing hope. “Why did he bring it up at all? It makes me want to pull my hair out."

Nearly 13,000 offenders who followed the rules and filed petitions for clemency with the pardon office are waiting for answers. Trump has ruled on only 204 clemency requests — 24 approvals and 180 denials. That is the slowest pace in decades.

Under Trump, the office has become little more than a paper pusher, as the White House took advice from celebrities, political pals and Fox News. It's one of the least visible, least understood corners of a federal govt scorned by a president waging war on the “deep state.”

Most people have never heard of the Office of the Pardon Attorney, but for 125 years, it's served as a key adviser to the president on clemency, one of the most unlimited powers bestowed by the Constitution.https://www.washingtonpost.com/investigations/most-clemency-grants-bypass-doj-and-go-to-well-connected-offenders/2020/02/03/4e8f3eb2-21ce-11ea-9c2b-060477c13959_story.html …
