@EricLengyel Quick sanity check here: in OpenGEX, it appears to be possible to list translate, rotate, scale in any order. Is it therefore valid to specify rotation around a point? (i.e., have two sets of translations.) Is it *intended* to work like this?

From the verbiage here, that seems correct: http://opengex.org/comparison.html  “Node transforms are separated into distinct components, […] enabling local pivot transforms.”

Yes, it’s perfectly fine to have translate, rotate, untranslate to achieve rotation about a point.

This is completely independent of the verbiage quoted, however. That refers to the separation between node and object transforms, which allows a local pivot to be specified without affecting child nodes.

The *intention* is that transforms simply be specified in whatever way is most convenient for the application. You could also rotate with a matrix R and follow it with a translation C − RC to rotate about the center point C.

I’m not sure I understand the full implications of this, does it mean that it’s possible that two different applications could have “valid” yet different interpretions of the file, or is that ruled out by the specification? (Admittedly I haven’t read the full spec yet.)

(On a different note, Game Engine Gems 1 is quite expensive compared to the others. Any idea if this is this a weird Amazon thing, or is this the fixed price for the foreseeable future?)

WTH? It looks like the publisher (who I was very unhappy with) took the book out of print, and some third-party seller's pricing algorithm is going nuts. Unfortunately, I have no control over this.

That’s unfortunate! Thanks anyway. I guess maybe I should pick up the Kindle Edition before things change with that. (I’m a little surprised to see so much w.r.t. “physically based ___” two years before 2012.
