I have to conclude that Apple's latest xcode included ARM compiler is broken really bad. I am not seeing anything on this machine that looks like corrupted memory.
Did you get this working? I’m currently traveling and didn’t have time to put something together for you

It got even better. Took the programatic example from
@FlohOfWoe and found that if I delete the storyboards, UIScreen will not return proper iPhoneX dimensions.#wtf. With the default "LaunchScreen" storyboard, its all good. -
f*ck it, I'm moving to WebAssembly, the browser makers can deal with this crap ;( I seriously don't understand what's wrong with mobile teams, just give us a C runtime, a "void main()" entry point, and let us programmatically setup a fullscreen 3D-API canvas to render on
