I think the future of the immersive web is parallel worlds. "Streets" built in HTML CSS GLTF, subject to regulations, standards, conventions, etc. With doorways to private property, do-what-you-want idiosyncratic buildings (worlds) built in WebGL, WASM, etc. A duality.

The current "Immersive Web = WebGL" dynamic is very unsatisfying to me. I don't see the totality of what I love about the web in it. But if we can compliment it with an XR web that optimizes for information reach, like the classic web, well now we're talking.

In the idiosyncratic private-property WebGL world, you can imagine browsers that _only_ pilot those spaces worlds. With begrudging doors back to HTML/CSS street level when you need to enter a credit card or some such, but first and foremost about WebGL content.

I've always worried about quality control and consistency in that WebGL realm, though. I did some talks on it: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1ORdKs1wNe7QysRYSBtmW8LnMTFRu69gEwyOSrjIaZyA/edit#slide=id.g186a1bfda4_0_58 …. You're really at the mercy of the creator's skills, without much the browser can do on your behalf (or the developers). Web-of-Flash analogues.

Better quality through better tools is part of the answer, but even there I feel there are some hard ceilings. 1) There will still be a paid-for high end in this world, and they'll run on native, because they'll be competing on graphics-gameplay-utility.

Native is still where the best quality will be, because we'll continue to see (enough) of the big XR platforms vertically integrate around hardware/OS to deliver best platform UX. And the standardized web will always lag the proprietary. What's the gap between WebGL and Metal 2?

People seem reticent to admit that the answer to this question, in terms of power consumption of significant applications, is an order of magnitude, as of today. We’re not just talking single or double percentages.

wasm support on iOS Safari has made the native-gap fairly small though, I've seen 3x..5x better perf than asm.js (mainly because iOS Safari has really bad asm.js performance though), WebGL overhead requires old-school batching tricks though

...the good thing is that in a cross-platform scenario, browsers have become "just another platform", a platform with mostly quite bad APIs and very different performance behaviour of course, but overall not such a mess as (for instance) Android or UWP
