Don't get me wrong, the book is probably excellent & Metal is well designed. This fragmentation is just frustrating. If they had Vulkan, there would is a good chance Doom and Wolf would be on MacOS. We don't have time to support yet another niche platform.
Metal came out a year before any viable implementations of Vulkan existed. It not only enabled unprecedented mobile gaming experiences; it also allowed a much more efficient reimplementation of graphics technologies and APIs up and down the stack. Sounds like a good reason to me.
