Lanier's VR setup was made in the USA, in Redwood City. It had to be back then: trade w China wasn't open enough for cheap manufacturing.

In 1992 Lanier speculated about software bots that would compete against each other and create absurd elections. My takeaway: Chatbots, VR, misinformation... none of these issues are new. Tech cos claiming "we couldn't have known" are just willfully ignorant.
