As someone who doesn't know a lot about writing shaders, but wants to learn to create 3D glass effects such as this - (http://www.ozone3d.net/demos_projects/chromatic_aberration.php …), will this book be sufficient? :)
Yep! The chapter on environment mapping covers a very similar effect. You’d just need to adapt it to fake the aberration.
