Yelp shipped Monocle on iPhone in 2009. Many, many Vuforia apps have shipped in the intervening time.

I’ve made AR projects in school using sensors stuck to my body
but not on mobile devices though. -
You can get rough position + direction from GPS + compass. Work out what heading the Eiffel Tower is, show icon over camera view, done ;)

yes, true, but AR is way more than that. I’m seeing the watch soon contributing with tactile feedback so it’s not just visual interaction.

That is AR, but a very trivial version. Just saying, it’s been doable since the 3GS or so, it’s just been evolving since :)
