Oh, neat. UIImage on iOS 9 can load PVRTC/ASTC compressed images directly.

Using a UIImage(named:) with MTKTextureLoader (it's a PNG with alpha) throws error "Image decoding failed". Is there an obvious reason?

I can reproduce this on iOS 10.3.1. Please file a Radar.

In the meantime, try using UIImagePNGRepresentation on the image to get a Data and create the texture from that.
