Weekend project: Want to figure out how to write an interesting shader in Metal. I want to do a ripple effect. I hope that's not too hard.

Here’s one to get you started. https://www.shadertoy.com/view/lds3RH You could also displace vertices rather than offsetting tex coords.

Thanks! Was trying to find something interesting to learn from that wasn't too far off the reservation. :)

Is this something I should be able to figure out as a learning project, or should I focus on something different?

If you can read and understand https://www.shadertoy.com/view/lds3RH , you can apply the essence elsewhere. d = cos(length(v)).

At some point I want to take 10-20 effects and write a shader book about how the math works and how to code it. Not now...

Though obsolete now, The Cg Tutorial (http://http.developer.nvidia.com/CgTutorial/cg_tutorial_chapter01.html …) elegantly balanced explanation of theory & shaders.

:) In seriousness, that book still contains some outstanding illustrations & explanations that are worth studying.
