for a unidirectional pipeline GPU compute will outperform vImage 10x easily. Round trips will need measuring case by case.

is that 10x, including a replaceRegion call to load up the texture data?

      2560*2560 BGRA ~= 26MB. Given that 500MB/s is practical, that is ~= 20 images/s.

on my Mac Pro 12 core 7950, 100 iterations. vImage 0.29s metal 3.55s on iPad Air 2, vImage does it ~2x as fast.

interesting numbers. What algorithm? How much of that is replaceRegion?

      here’s the basic test bits, replaceRegion is ~ 1/3, getBytes ~2/3s.https://gist.github.com/anonymous/f0eed81bcb1cb01ba6d5e9967bfa3219 …

how about: vImage -> replaceRegion -> display vs replaceRegion -> Metal Compute -> display

so just to understand the basics, for something like this I should be looking at using a CAMetalLayer to display outputTexture?

exactly. Create a simple CAMetalLayer subclass to display a textured quad. @warrenm has some great tutorials on his site.

what about MTLTexture -> CIImage -> UIImage, would that keep it on the GPU without a ton of UIView changes?

I’m not sure what the implications of chaining those things together are. Would need to experiment. @FlexMonkey?

isn't `MTKView` the best way to display Metal content?

an UI/NSImage that can be used in existing views is a lot more convenient.

MTKView keeps everything on the GPU, as soon as you create a UIImage, you're involving the CPU....

CIImage to UIImage requires a CGImage in the middle.
