so I was wondering, can u calculate the intersection point of a sphere wo/ using sqrt?
@0martint The ray params are the roots of a quadratic eq, but you could try replacing sqrt with an iteration or two of Newton-Raphson.

@warrenm I already got to 2x faster, but now profiling shows that sqrts are way too common... so I thought I'd try to eliminate them
